Even after 13 years, Brachia "Maslina" continues to win awards for packaging design

Brachia “Maslina” has been awarded again, this time at the prestigious olive oil packaging design competition Forms of Oil 2019, held as part of the Olio Officina Festival in Milan.

The Olio Officina Festival is a cultural project aimed at promoting the culture of oil, vinegar, and spices and encouraging healthy, proper nutrition as a source of well-being and a foundation of preventive medicine. The festival is intended for a broad audience — on the one hand, passionate lovers of oils, spices, and good food, and on the other, professional chefs, wholesalers, and those working in the HoReCa sector. As part of the festival, a competition for olive oil packaging and visual identity design, Forms of Oil, is also held.

The olive oil brand Brachia is one of the first olive oil producers in Croatia to begin using design in the development of its products, becoming a sort of pioneer in the use of design in its market.

One of the first products to be noticed for its design was Brachia “Maslina” – an original olive-shaped ceramic bottle with a white glaze. Jelena Gvozdanović and Izvorka Jurić designed the bottle for the then-creative agency TRIDVAJEDAN. The packaging has been on the market for 13 years, during which it has continuously won awards for its timeless design—an extraordinary phenomenon, considering that the relevance of packaging in design competitions usually lasts about a year. Among the many awards received by Brachia “Maslina” is the prestigious 2007 WorldStar Award, the packaging design equivalent of the Oscars, presented by the World Packaging Organisation.

Juries of numerous design competitions, as well as many gastronomy critics, have for years highlighted the unique combination of the traditional and the contemporary in the design of the “Maslina” bottle.

The traditional method of storing olive oil in a ceramic bottle is combined with a modern white surface, giving it an almost pharmaceutical look that emphasizes its healing properties and high nutritional value. Another distinctive feature of the design is the possibility of reusing the bottle, which also serves as an exceptional decorative object thanks to its sculptural quality.

Brachia “Maslina” is one of the most award-winning utilitarian objects in Croatian design.

Successful product design helped the then-unknown agricultural cooperative Brachia emerge from anonymity and begin selling its oil in major world metropolises. Thanks to its continued collaboration with designer Izvorka Jurić, Brachia has, over the years, grown into a reputable brand known for designing an entire range of product sub-lines. In addition to the premium olive oil Brachia “Maslina” and the newest product—the first Croatian olive oil for children, Brachia Kids—Design Bureau Izvorka Jurić has designed the product lines for Brachia varietal oils, ekoBrachia, and Brachia & Friends.
