An exploration of the connection between books, urban structures and the everyday life of the city

We recently took part in the public competition for the new visual identity of Zagreb City Libraries (KGZ), Croatia’s largest public library network, with our proposal titled City Book Block (Gradski knjižni blok).

Our concept approaches libraries not simply as places for books, but as active urban spaces where knowledge, people and ideas meet — a living network connecting neighborhoods, communities and the everyday rhythms of Zagreb.

At the heart of the identity is a graphic analogy between a book block’s structure and the city’s urban fabric. The linear patterns forming the KGZ monogram evoke both streets and city blocks, as well as books on shelves and pages within a book. Their rhythm suggests movement, openness, and connection.

Built around this idea, we developed a flexible visual system that unites the library network while letting individual branches, programs, and audiences keep their distinct character. The identity combines a strong typographic foundation, a versatile color system, and graphic elements that translate across print, digital communication, signage, and public spaces.

City Book Block is our vision of the library as the city’s living room, a place where the city is read and written every day.

Although our proposal was not selected, we’re pleased to share a concept we believe in, one that reflects our view of libraries as open, inclusive spaces for learning, creativity, and exchange.

Congratulations to the awarded designers and studios!
