Croatian Mint’s “Independence Anniversary”

The packaging design for the gold and silver sets commemorating the 30th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Croatia combines Croatia’s natural, national, and monetary values. The concept is inspired by secret wooden boxes traditionally used to store objects of great value.

Croatia’s principal monetary institutions, the Croatian National Bank and the Croatian Mint, issued this limited series of numismatic sets featuring commemorative gold and silver coins with motifs of all nine denominations of Croatian currency. With Croatia’s transition from the kuna to the euro, these numismatic sets have become valuable collectors’ items and lasting reminders of the long-standing Croatian currency – the kuna.

The packaging for the gold set, produced in a limited edition of 30 pieces, is designed as the “Croatian Cube” – a monumental object that conveys strength and significance and is intended to be prominently displayed like a sculpture. The cube, a three-dimensional interpretation of the square as the fundamental element of the Croatian chequerboard, is made of oak and olive wood, both represented on Croatian coin denominations. The gold coins, protected in capsules, are arranged inside on individual oak and olive wood pedestals forming a chequerboard pattern. Each pedestal can be removed for an impressive presentation of the coins.

The silver set, produced in a limited edition of 300 pieces, is designed as the “Croatian Cuboid”. It is a luxurious wooden box intended for safekeeping and elegant presentation. The cuboid is made of oak, while the encapsulated coins are arranged inside in a chequerboard pattern made of linden wood – lipa in Croatian, which was also the name of the one-hundredth subunit of the kuna.
